Chopsticks

Chopsticks, originating from ancient China as early as the Shang dynasty (1600-1100 BC), is the traditional eating utensil of China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan and Vietnam. In Vietnamese, chopsticks are called dua(pronounced DOO-AH).

Step 1:
Hold one chopstick between your thumb and middle finger. Position the chopstick so that it lies at the base of your thumb (on the joint) and at the lower joint of the middle finger. This chopstick shouldn't touch the forefinger.

Step 2:
Place the other chopstick between your thumb and forefinger. The side of the chopstick should rest against the tip ofyour thumb; the top of the chopstick should rest against the pad of your forefinger.

Step 3:
Be sure the tips of the chopsticks are parallel

Step 4:
Keep the first chopstick stationary as you practice moving the second chopstick toward the stationary one.

Step 5:
Use this technique to position the chopsticks around a piece of food.

Step 6:
Hold the food firmly as you lift it toward your mouth.

Chopstick etiquette:

  • The rice bowl is raised to the mouth and the rice is pushed into the mouth using the chopsticks.

  • It is acceptable to use a fork or spoon intead of chopsticks when eating rice from a plate. Using chopsticks to eat rice from a plate is hard.

  • It is proper to always use two chopsticks at once, even when using them for stirring.

  • One should not pick up food from the serving plate or bowl and place it directly in the mouth. Food must be placed in your own bowl first.

  • Chopsticks should never be placed in a "V" shape when done eating or should not be planted upright in a full bowl of rice; it is interpreted as a bad omen.

  • Do not use your chopsticks as spears.

  • Do NOT hunt and peck to find the "good stuff" on a serving plate. Instead, visually hunt and peck for the item you want from the servering plate.
